How we handle your information
Who we are. BillChecker.co.uk is run by Copious Limited (company number 11437826), registered office Unit 2a Crown Business Park, Cowm Top Lane, Rochdale, England, OL11 2PU. Copious Limited is the controller of the information described here. You can contact us by post at that address.
Your bill
When you upload a bill, we read it on our own servers in the UK to produce your results. The file is deleted before your results appear. We do not keep a copy, and it is never sent to any cloud AI service. We use it only to give you your results. Our lawful basis is that you asked us to provide the check (taking steps at your request). You don't have to give us anything, but without a bill we can't check it.
Your results are sent to your browser and kept only in that browser tab. They disappear when you close it.
Who else sees anything
- Cloudflare carries your upload to us over an encrypted connection and runs a check that you're a person, not a bot.
- Companies House: if your bill is addressed to a limited company, we search the public register for that company's name to find its business type.
- postcodes.io receives the premises postcode, and the European Commission's PVGIS service receives the location, to estimate solar output.
None of them receives your bill. These lookups are part of providing the results you asked for (legitimate interests: giving you an accurate, useful result).
Transfers outside the UK
Cloudflare is a US company and may process connection data (such as your IP address) outside the UK, under the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework and standard contractual safeguards. The European Commission's PVGIS service is in the EU, which the UK recognises as providing adequate protection. When reminder emails start, they will be sent through Resend, a US email provider, under the same safeguards.
Renewal reminders
If you ask for a renewal reminder, we store your email address, your contract end date, whether it's electricity or gas, and the wording you agreed to, on our own servers in the UK. We use it only to send that one reminder (our lawful basis is your consent). We delete it within 12 months of your contract end date, or straight away if you unsubscribe. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Statistics and logs
We don't currently run any analytics on this site. Our server holds your IP address briefly in memory to stop abuse (limiting how many checks one connection can run) and does not write it to any log. If we add analytics, we will update this notice and ask for consent where the law requires it.
Automated decisions
Your results are produced automatically, but we make no decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, delete, restrict or move information we hold about you, object to processing based on legitimate interests, or withdraw your consent at any time (for reminders, one click on the unsubscribe link does this), by writing to us at the address above. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, please contact us first and we will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
